Pubdate:
1/21/2026 12:44:45 PM
The humanitarian impact of the widespread flooding that has been affecting southern Mozambique since 24 December is increasing.
According to the National Disaster Management Institute (INGD), as of 21 January, 52 people died, six people are missing, 30 have been injured, and 95 306 people have been displaced in 82 accommodation centres, with a total of 644 613 affected people across the country. In addition, 3 354 houses have been destroyed.
Water levels continue rising due to important yields realised in the upstream dams, located in western parts of the county and in the neighbouring ones.
On 19 January, the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) was activated for flooding and severe erosion.
On 17 January, the Copernicus EMS was activated in rapid mapping mode (), and 28 maps have been produced so far.
On 21-22 January, more rainfall is still forecast over the country; drier conditions are expected in southern Mozambique on 23 January.
