France - Wildfire (ECHO 18 Sep 2024)

  • A wildfire has been affecting the Canigou Massif in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, in southern France since 12 September, resulting in evacuations and damage.
  • As of 13 September,  the Interministerial Operational Center for Crisis Management (COGIC) reports that the wildfire has been burning an area of 300 ha, eight firefighters have been injured, the municipalities of Castelnou and Montauriol have been evacuated, and two houses have been damaged. 
    National authorities deployed 1,080 firefighters, 16 aircraft and two helicopters to control the wildfire.
  • Over the next 24 hours, according to the JRC EFFIS, the fire danger forecast is from very high to extreme in the affected area.
