  • A new tropical cyclone named KHANUN, formed over the central Philippine Sea, is moving north-west over the Okinawa Islands. On 31 July at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located over the sea approximately 630 km south-east of the south-eastern coast of Okinawa Island, southern Japan, with maximum sustained winds of 194 km/h.
  • KHANUN is forecast to continue north-west strengthening and it could cross the southern Ryukyu Islands on 1-2 August bringing heavy rain, strong winds and storm surges.
  • For the next 48 hours, heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, strong winds and high gusts, and storm surge are forecast particularly over Okinawa Island (under red warning) and southern Ryukyu Islands.

  • Tropical Cyclone KHANUN continued moving northwest between the Philippine Sea and the East China Sea. In the Philippines, the cyclone is forecast to cause enhanced monsoon rains over the western portions of Luzon and Visayas in the next three days. On 1 August at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located over the sea approximately 250 km south-east of Naha City located in southern Okinawa Island, southern Japan, with maximum sustained winds of 222 km/h.
  • According to media reports, some public offices and supermarkets will be closed on 1 August and hundreds of flights into and out of Naha airport have been cancelled.
  • KHANUN is forecast to continue north-west and it could pass between the islands of Miyako and Okinawa, southern Ryukyu Islands, on 1-2 August, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and storm surges.
  • For the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, strong winds with high gusts, and storm surge are forecast particularly over Okinawa Island, under purple warnings for storm surge, red for storm and wave, and southern Ryukyu Islands.

  • Tropical Cyclone KHANUN is moving northwest over the East China Sea. On 2 August at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located over the sea approximately 55 km south-east of the southern coast of Kume Island and 81 km south-west of Naha City located in southern Okinawa Island, southern Japan, with maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h.
  • According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, 11 people have been injured in Okinawa Prefecture while almost 700,000 people are under evacuation orders in Okinawa Prefecture as well as more than 5,100 others in Kagoshima Prefecture. 210,000 homes in Okinawa are without power, and the airport in Naha remains closed.
  • KHANUN is forecast to continue north-west until 3 August, and on 4-5 August it could turn east-northeast moving towards Amami Island, Kagoshima Prefecture, as a tropical storm.
  • For the next 24 hours heavy rain, strong winds and storm surge are forecast over most of the Ryukyu Islands particularly Okinawa and Kume Islands, under purple warnings for storm surge.

  • Tropical Cyclone KHANUN is moving northwest over the East China Sea. On 3 August at 0.00UTC, its centre was located 200 km off the western coast of southern Japan, with maximum sustained winds of 167 km/h.
  • Following the passage of KHANUN south of Okinawa Island on 2 August, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency reports 41 injured people in Okinawa and Kagoshima Prefectures. 198,000 people are still under evacuation orders in Okinawa prefecture. Power disruptions continue to affect 200,000 homes, and only emergency cases are being treated at hospitals that have lost power.
  • KHANUN is forecast to change its direction turning north-east on 4 August. It could then cross the Tokunoshima and the Amami Islands on 6-7 August with maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h. There is still uncertainty about the trajectory and intensity projections.
  • Heavy rain is expected to continue until 6 August in Okinawa and Amami.
  • The Taiwan Central Weather Bureau has issued yellow heavy rain and high wind advisories.

  • Tropical Cyclone KHANUN changed its direction and is moving east-northeast over the East China Sea. On 4 August at 0.00UTC, its centre was located 222 km north-west of Kume Island, southern Japan, with maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h.
  • Following the passage of KHANUN close to Okinawa Island on 1 August, the number of injured people reached 46 people, as reported by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA). In addition, 55,655 people are still under evacuation orders and 16 houses have been affected in the Okinawa Prefecture.
  • KHANUN is forecast to continue moving east-northeast and to approach Tokunoshima and Amami Islands on 5-6 August, with maximum sustained winds of 100 km/h as a tropical storm. After that, it will move across the northern Philippine Sea towards the southern coast of Honshu, the largest Island of Japan.
  • For the next 24 hours, heavy rain, strong winds and storm surge are forecast across most of the Ryukyu Islands, particularly over central and northern islands, and southern Kyushu and Honshu Islands. Heavy rain and storm warnings are in effect.

  • Tropical Cyclone KHANUN reached the northern Philippine Sea after it crossed Tokunoshima and Amami Islands on 5-6 August. On 7 August at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located 285km south of Yakushima Island, southern Japan, with maximum sustained winds of 102 km/h (tropical storm).
  • Following the activity of KHANUN across the Islands of the Okinawa and Kagoshima since 1 August, one person died and 69 people have been injured in Okinawa, and three people were injured in Kagoshima. Almost 69,000 people are under evacuation orders across Okinawa, Tokushima, and Kagoshima Prefectures.
  • KHANUN is expected to move north passing close to the southwestern coast of Kyushu on 8-9 August, and could make landfall over the southern coast of South Korea on 10 August. It could also bring strong winds, high waves, landslides, and floods to North Korea.
  • For the next 24 hours, heavy rain, strong winds and storm surge are forecast across most of the Ryukyu Islands. Heavy rain, storm, and landslide warnings are in effect for parts of the aforementioned areas.

  • Tropical Cyclone KHANUN is advancing north-northwest towards the East China Sea. As of 8 August 0:00 UTC, its centre was 322 km south of Kyushu Island, Japan, with sustained winds of 74 km/h and gusts up to 144 km/h. Since 1 August, KHANUN's impact on Okinawa and Kagoshima Islands has resulted in one death, 72 injuries, and the evacuation of over 328,000 residents in Miyazaki, Okinawa, and Kagoshima.
  • The cyclone is projected to approach southern Kyushu and Goto Islands by 9 August, make landfall on South Korea's central southern coast on 10 August, and subsequently weaken over the Korean Peninsula. Thousands of people in South Korea's southern coast are being evacuated.
  • Over the next 48 hours, regions including northern Ryukyu Islands, southern Kyushu, and Satsuma, Osumi, and Tanegashima/Yakushima in Japan are expected to experience heavy rains, potent winds, and storm surges. Similar severe weather is expected for southern South Korea from 9 August.

  • Tropical Cyclone KHANUN crossed Goto Island, southern Japan, on 9 August and is making landfall in the central-southern coast in southern South Korea. On 10 August at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located 10 km south of Geoje-si City, with maximum sustained winds of 83 km/h (tropical storm). 
  • KHANUN is expected to move over the whole Korean Peninsula, weakening and dissipating on 12 August.
  • According to national authorities and media, in several Prefectures of southern Japan, almost 934,000 people are still under evacuation orders and 16,000 households experienced power cuts. In South Korea, over 30,000 scouts were evacuated from their campsite as well as more than 10,000 people living in the coastal areas.
  • For the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surge are forecast over the Korean Peninsula and parts of southern Japan. According to the Korean Meteorological Administration, the whole of South Korea is under Typhoon warning.
  • Another tropical cyclone named LAN, formed in the Pacific Ocean, is moving north-west and could make landfall over the south-central coast of central Japan on 15 August.

  • Tropical cyclone KHANUN made landfall over the south-eastern coast of South Korea, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surge and leading to casualties and damage. It then weakened, moving across the Korean Peninsula and over DPRK as a tropical depression.
  • According to media, in South Korea, one person has died. In addition, almost 15,900 people have been temporarily evacuated (9,741 returned home), approximately 14,500 families experienced power outages, and 361 facilities have been damaged. 
  • In DPRK national authorities are involved to prepare flood-mitigation measures.
  • In Japan, there are still more than 65,061 people under evacuation orders, primarily in Miyazaki Prefecture.
  • For the next 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds are forecast over the Korean peninsula while moderate rain is expected over southern Japan.
  • A new tropical cyclone LAN could make landfall over the central-southern coast of Honshu Island near the city of Hamamatsu in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, on 15 August.
