  • On 3 December, Mount Marapi located in West Sumatra, increased its volcanic activity with volcanic ash emission and volcanic rocks. The ash column was observed 3,000 m above the peak.
  • According to the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) and the ASEAN Disaster Information Network (ADINet), as of 3 December,  at least 11 people died, nine have been injured, 28 are still missing and a total of 75 people have been affected.
  • The authorities appealed to the people to stay outside the danger zone (3 km from the crater).

  • The activity of Mount Marapi, located in West Sumatra Province, is still ongoing and more than 45 eruptions have been recorded by the authorities.
  • The National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB) reports, as of 6 December, 15 fatalities and eight still missing people following the main eruption occurred on 3 December. Moreover, according to the ASEAN Disaster Information Network (ADINet), 12 people have been injured and 75 others affected.
  • Local and national authorities are still conducting rescue operations and are monitoring the activity of the volcano.
  • People around the volcano are asked not to carry out any activities at a distance of less than 3 km from the crater. In addition, people in four nearby sub-districts are advised to reduce activities outside the home and to wear masks when doing outdoor activities.

The Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report provides information about global volcanism on a weekly basis. Latest Marapi report has been published on 17 Jan 2024 10:08.
PVMBG reported that eruptive activity at Marapi (on Sumatra) was ongoing at Verbeek Crater during 10-16 January. Dense, white-and-gray ash plumes rose as high as 1.5 km above the summit and drifted NW, W, and SW during 11-15 January. Weather conditions sometimes prevented views of the volcano. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a scale of 1-4), and the public was warned to stay 4.5 km away from Verbeek Crater.
