  • Heavy rainfall, strong winds and hailstorms continued to affect southern and eastern South Africa, in particular the Eastern Cape and the KwaZulu-Natal provinces, since 1 June, causing floods, the Kariega river overflow and some severe weather-related incidents, resulting in an increased number of casualties and damage.
  • Media report, as of 4 June, 12 fatalities, of whom seven across the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, southern Eastern Cape province and five more fatalities in the area nearby the Durban city, KwaZulu-Natal province. Media also report more than 2,000 evacuated people throughout the Eastern Cape province and significant damage to structures across the area of oThongathi town, KwaZulu-Natal province.
  • Over the next 24 hours, more heavy rainfall with locally very heavy rainfall is still forecasted over the whole already affected Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.

  • Following the heavy rainfall, strong winds and snowfall that affected the Eastern Cape and the KwaZulu-Natal provinces in eastern South Africa, on 1-3 June and caused floods, the number of casualties and damage has increased.
  • As of 6 June, according to media reports, 22 people died, of whom 11 in Eastern Cape province and 11 in Durban city in KwaZulu-Natal province, 55 people have been injured, 120 people have been displaced in three temporary shelters, more than 2,000 people have been evacuated in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. In addition, several houses and schools have been damaged.
  • Over the next 48 hours, more rainfall is still forecasted over western and southern South Africa, and drier conditions are expected in the eastern provinces.
