  • Heavy rainfall has been affecting southern Brazil (particularly the São Paulo State and the neighbouring Rio de Janeiro State) over the past 48 hours, causing floods, severe weather-related incidents (in particular due to lightning), and triggering landslides that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • Media report, as of 9 February, six fatalities across the Rio de Janeiro State, of which two in the Rio de Janeiro Capital City due to landslides, two in São Goncalo Town, one in Niteroi City, and one more in Saquarema City.
  • In the São Paulo State, media also report one fatality in Osasco City and one person still missing across the São Paulo Capital City.
  • Over the next 24 hours, more heavy rainfall is forecast over the whole Rio de Janeiro State and over the southern coastal area of the São Paulo State.
Paranà State, Brazil, January 2023Local media reported heavy rain caused flooding and damage in Guaratuba and Araucária in Paranà State, Brazil on 17 January 2023. Forty homes were damaged and 6 people were displaced in Araucária. The opening of the spillways of the Porto Primavera Hydroelectric Power Plant in São Paulo caused the Paraná River to rise, flooding areas along the riverbanks in Marilena and Porto São José in northwest Paraná from 23 January 2023. No properties were damaged. On 30 January more than 90 mm of rain fell in 2 hours flooding parts of Francisco Beltrão.
