Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Late December 2021 to Early January 2022In Iran, the Iranian Red Crescent (IRCS) reported on 03 January that teams had assisted around 10,000 people affected by floods from 30 December. Judging from IRCS reports and Social Media, the hardest hit areas were in Fars and Sistan and Baluchestan Provinces. IRCS said the provinces of West Azerbaijan, Isfahan, Bushehr, Qazvin, Kerman, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Zanjan, Khuzestan, South Khorasan, Hormozgan and Yazd were also affected. IRCS teams rescued a total of 631 people and moved 2,106 people to emergency accommodation mostly in Chabahar and Konarak in Sistan and Baluchestan Province. At least 141 homes were damaged by floods. As of 04 January, IRCS reported 20,000 people affected across 17 provinces (mostly Hormozgan, Sistan and Baluchestan, Fars and Kerman ). Six people lost their lives in floods in Darab, Lamerd and Beyram in Fars Province, Sirjan in Kerman Province and Mehrestan in Sistan and Baluchestan Province. State media later reported 8 people had died. Severe weather was reported further east, affecting areas of Balochistan Province in Pakistan and Kandahar Province in Afghanistan, where helicopters were used to rescue several people stranded. Note: Areas on the opposite side of the Persian Gulf (chiefly Oman, UAE and Kuwait) were also affected by flooding during this period.
