Eastern Germany, Late July 2021Heavy rain in eastern Germany caused rivers to rise and some flooding in areas of the state of Saxony, mostly in the mountainous areas of Sächsische Schweiz close to the Czech border. Some rivers including the Elbe were high for a short period, but as of 19 July all had returned to normal or near to normal levels. Officials appealed to residents to avoid basements, underground garages, underpasses and flooded roads. Several roads were closed and some areas of Gohrisch left isolated for a short time. Bus and train travel was disrupted, including the international train route between Germany and Czechia. There were no reports of evacuations or casualties.
