  • Tropical cyclone JASPER formed over the Solomon Sea, very close to the Solomon Islands, on 5 December and started moving south-west over the Coral Sea and toward the north-eastern Queensland State (north-eastern Australia). On 11 December at 5.00 UTC its centre was located over the Coral Sea approximately 455 km east of Port Douglas Town (eastern Far North Queensland Region), with maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h (tropical storm).
  • JASPER is forecast to make landfall over the sparsely populated area of Port Douglas Town (just south of the Cape York Peninsula) on 12 December very early in the afternoon (UTC), with maximum sustained winds up to 93 km/h (tropical storm). After that it is forecast to continue moving westward over northern Queensland State on 13-14 December, weakening.
  • Over the next 72 hours, heavy rainfall and strong winds are forecast over the north-eastern Queensland State. A warning zone fore gales was issued by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) over the coastal area of north-eastern Queensland.

  • Tropical cyclone JASPER continued west over the Coral Sea toward the north-eastern Queensland State, slightly strenghtening. On 13 December at 6.00 UTC its centre was located over the sea approximately 110 km east of the coastal City of Cocktown (eastern Cape York Peninsula), with maximum sustained winds of 114 km/h (tropical storm).
  • Media report, as of 13 December, a number of voluntary evacuation orders issued by local authorities of the cities of Port Douglas, Cairns and Cooktown, where shelters were already prepared. In addition, several power outages and canceled flights in local airports were reported across the area.
  • JASPER is forecast to make landfall over the area between Cocktown City and Port Douglas City on very late in the morning (UTC) of 13 December, with maximum sustained winds up to 95-100 km/h (tropical storm). After that it is forecast to continue westward inland over the Cape York Peninsula on 14-15 December, further weakening and becaming a tropical depression.
  • Over the next 48 hours, heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over the north-eastern Queensland State. A warning zone fore gales issued by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) over this area is still in force.

  • Tropical cyclone JASPER passed over the Cape York Peninsula on 13-15 December as a tropical storm and as a tropical depression. Its passage caused very heavy rainfall and floods across the region, in particular over the eastern coastal area, where the most affected cities and towns are: Cairns, Port Douglas, Daintree, Cooktown, Wujal Wujal and Hope Vale.
  • Media report, as of 18 December, approximately 300 evacuated people. Moreover, local authorities issued a voluntary evacuation order for thousands of people across the affected area. In addition, several flooded buildings and roads and up to 14,000 power outages were reported. Media also report the closure of the Cairns airport.
  • Over the next 72 hours, more heavy rainfall with locally very heavy rainfall is still forecast over the whole Cape York Peninsula.
