  • A new tropical cyclone named TEJ formed over the central Arabian Sea on 20 October and started moving north-west toward the Arabian Peninsula, strengthening. On 23 October at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located over the Sea, north of Socotra Island (Yemen) and approximately 210 km south-east of Qishn Town, Al Mahrah Governorate, south-eastern Yemen, near the border with Oman, with maximum sustained winds of 176 km/h.
  • TEJ is forecast to make landfall over the area of Qishn Town  in the late afternoon (UTC) of 23 October, with maximum sustained winds up to 145 km/h.
  • Over the next 72 hours, very heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surge are forecast over the Socotra Island, eastern Yemen and the neighbouring western Oman.

  • Tropical cyclone TEJ made landfall over the southern coast of Al Mahrah Governorate on the night of 23 October and continued to move northwestward. On 24 October at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located about 20 km south of Al Ghaidah (Yemen) and 240 km west-southwest of Salalah (Oman).
  • According to media, some houses have been severely impacted as well as roads and crops in Al-Mahra Governorate. In addition, interruptions of the communications and electricity network have been reported. 
  • The authorities of Al-Mahra Governorate asked the citizens living in the affected areas and to go to nearby shelters.
  • TEJ is forecast to move further north-westward weakening and dissipating on 25 October. For the next 24 hours, more heavy rainfall is forecast over the Al-Mahra, Hadramout and Shabwa Governorates of Yemen and over the Dhofar governorate in Oman.
  • DG ECHO partners are monitoring the situation and are ready to respond.

  • The passage of tropical cyclone TEJ which made landfall over the southern coast of Al Mahrah Governorate, eastern Yemen on 24 October, resulted in casualties and displacement.
  • According to media reports, at least seven people have died while more than 1,000 people have been displaced. The same source report also that a state of emergency was declared by the Internationally Recognised Government of Yemen, and suspended schools.
  • On 25 October, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over eastern Yemen and western Oman while on 26 October, moderate rain is forecast across eastern and north-eastern Yemen and southern Saudi Arabia.
  • DG ECHO partners are monitoring the situation and are ready to respond. The Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) cluster launched a life-saving response in the affected areas in Al Mahrah Governorate. More than 4 100 emergency kits have been already dispatched.
