  • A new tropical cyclone named EMNATI formed over the central Indian Ocean on 16 February and is moving west-southwestwards over central Madagascar. On 18 February at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located 660 km north of Rodrigues Island (Mauritius), with maximum sustained winds of 106 km/h (tropical storm).
  • EMNATI is forecast to continue west-southwest, it will pass north of the Mascarene Islands on 19-20 February and it could approach central Madagascar on 22 February. On 15 February, tropical storm DUMAKO, hit central Madagascar, affecting at least 5,100 people.
  • On 18-20 February, moderate to heavy rain and strong winds are forecast over Mauritius and La Réunion.

  • Tropical Cyclone EMNATI made landfall in eastern Fianarantsoa Province, between Manakara City (Fitovinany Region) and Farafagana City (Atsimo-Atsinanana Region), on 22 February very late in the evening (UTC), with maximum sustained winds of up to 137 km/h. On 23 February at 6.00 UTC, its centre was located inland in southern Atsimo-Atsinanana Region, approximately 60 km east of Betroka Town, with maximum sustained winds of 95 km/h (tropical storm).
  • EMNATI is expected to continue moving southwestward inland over southern Madagascar on 23 February, further weakening. After that, it is forecast to continue moving south over the Indian Ocean on 24-25 February, as a tropical storm.
  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surge are forecast in central-southern Madagascar, in particular across the Grand Sud region. Red warnings for cyclone are in effect over this region.

  • After the passage of Tropical Cyclone EMNATI on 22-23 February over central and southern Madagascar, at least 51 300 people have been affected, as reported by The National Bureau of Disaster Risk Management (BNGRC).
  • According to the latest update, on 24 February, about 45 190 people have been displaced, as more than 12 680 houses have been damaged or destroyed. 
  • Damages were reported to 1 985 school buildings, affecting a number of students, while 16 road sections and one bridge are impracticable. Aerial assessments by the Government and humanitarian partners have begun, with some areas—including Midongy du Sud—cut-off by flooding.
  • A DG ECHO organized flight departed this morning from Nairobi airport at 05:51 local time with 29 emergency humanitarian and civil protection experts, and 600kg of equipment. The aircraft landed in Tana at 12:00 local time. These experts will be providing help following the humanitarian consequences of tropical cyclones Batsirai and Emnati that hit Madagascar.
  • The European Commission's Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated (EMSR565) to provide satellite maps for five areas affected by the passage of TC EMNATI. 
  • Light to locally moderate rainfall is expected on 25-27 February over most of central and northern Madagascar.

  • The Haitian Civil Protection Agency reports 1,419 fatalities after the 7.2 M earthquake in Nippes Department (southern Haiti) on 14 August. The Department most affected is Sud with 1,133 fatalities, followed by Grand Anse (162), Nippes (122) and Nord Ouest (2).
  • In addition, more than 6,900 people have been injured and more than 83,000 houses damaged or destroyed. The passage of Tropical Cyclone GRACE is complicating rescue efforts and the situation of those that have been displaced.
  • On 16 August, Haiti requested assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism for emergency medical teams, water health and sanitation (WASH) needs and shelter items.
  • The EU Copernicus emergency satelite mapping service was activated to support the damage assessment () and six maps have been produced so far.

  • Tropical storm RAI (locally known in the Philippines as Odette) is intensifying, as it moves westwards over the western Pacific. On 14 December at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located about 250 km east of Palau, with maximum sustained winds of 95 km/h. 
  • During the morning of 14 December, RAI is expected to further intensify, as it passes north of Palau. Then it is forecast to move towards the Philippines, reaching the Eastern Visayas in the morning of 16 December, with maximum sustained winds up to 175 km/h. In the Philippines, national authorities have started with preparedness and response measures, ahead of the arrival of RAI.
  • A typhoon warning is in effect for Palau. On 14 December, heavy rain and strong winds are expected for Palau, and from 15 December for central and southern Philippines.

  • Cumbre La Vieja volcano continues its explosive and effusive activity. On 23 September since 16.20 UTC (17.20 local time), a series of powerful explosions with significant ash and gas emissions have been reported by the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (INVOLCAN).
  • The lava flow is 3800 m long and is located 2100 m from the coast and its speed has slowed down. The lava affected the area of almost 220 ha. 
  • At least 5,700 people have been evacuated across the Municipalities of Tazacorte, El Pais and Los Llanos de Aridane and 400 houses have been destroyed. 800 emergency personnel from all administrations are currently working in the field.
  • The aviation colour code has risen to red due to the eruptive column of gases and ash emitted on 23 September.
  • The Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service (EMSR546) was activated on 19 September to support the damage assessment and eight maps have been produced so far.
