  • The severe wildfires that hit Maui Island, Hawaii, particularly the area of Lahaina City and Kula City, in the western and central part of the island, resulted in an increasing number of casualties and damage.
  • According to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), at least 93 died, 26 people have been injured, hundreds of people are still missing, and over 8,700 people have been evacuated, of whom more than 1,400 are in evacuation shelters. More than 2,200 structures have been destroyed by the fires across the Island. In addition, an evacuation order is still active for west Maui and an unsafe water advisory has been issued in Kula and Lahaina Cities.
  • National authorities are still involved in the firefighting operations. According to FEMA and to the JRC Global Wildfire Information GWIS, the burn areas have an extension of almost 5,000 hectares and the fires on Maui are not 100% contained.
  • Over the next 24 hours, according to the JRC GWIS, the fire danger forecast is moderate to extreme over northern and central Maui.
