USA, Cuba - Hurricane IAN, update (ECHO 04 Oct 2022)Tue, 04 Oct 2022 09:46
- The number of fatalities due to the passage of Hurricane IAN on 28-29 September over the Florida Peninsula (south-eastern USA) has increased to at least 101, as search and rescue operations continue, as reported by media.
- At least 54 people have died in Lee County (south-west coast of Florida, where IAN made landfall), while 24 fatalities occurred in Charlotte County (south-west Florida). More than 1,900 rescuers have been made across Florida, where over 470,800 households are without power and more than 25 Counties are experiencing a shortage of clean water.
- In Cuba, IAN passed over western Provinces on 26-27 September, resulting in three fatalities, as reported by UN OCHA. In Pinar del Río, the worst affected province, more than 553,800 people don't have power and more than 100,000 houses (around 60% of the houses in the Province) have been damaged or destroyed. At least 228 households are displaced and unable to return home, as reported by UN Country Team, Cuba. Additional damage, water and power disruptions have occurred in Havana Capital City.
