  • Hurricane DEBBY, formed in the Gulf of Mexico is approaching the north-western coast of Florida and it is gaining strength. On 5 August at 6.00 UTC, its centre is about 71 km south-west of Steinhatchee town (Florida) with maximum sustained winds of 130 km/h (hurricane).
  • On the forecast track, DEBBY will make landfall over the Florida Big Bend coast in late morning. After that, it is expected to move slowly across northern Florida and southern Georgia on late 5 August and 6 August and be near the Georgia coast by on the night of 6 August.
  • On 5-7 August, heavy rain and strong winds are forecast across portions of central and northern Florida and southeastern North Carolina. 
  • A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for the Florida coast from the middle of Longboat Key northward to Indian Pass including Tampa Bay, over Georgia and South Carolina coast from the Mouth of the St. Mary's River to South Santee River South Carolina. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the Florida coast from the Yankeetown to Indian Pass.

  • After its landfall over north-western Florida as a Cat. 1 hurricane on 5 August late in the morning (UTC), DEBBY continued moving north-east inland over southern Georgia. On 6 August at 6.00 UTC its centre was located inland approximately 40 km west of Brunswick city and 120 km south-west of Savannah city (Georgia), with maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h (tropical storm).
  • After its passage, media report five fatalities across the Big Bend region (northern Florida). The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reports, 161 evacuated people in 24 shelters and mandatory evacuation orders for seven counties throughout Florida.
  • On 7-8 August, DEBBY is forecast to continue moving north-east over the Atlantic Ocean along the coast of South Carolina, as a tropical storm, with maximum sustained winds up to 93 km/h.
  • Over the next 48 hours, very heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over northern Florida, most of Georgia and North and South Carolina. NOAA has issued a tropical storm warning and a storm surge warning over most of this area.

  • Tropical cyclone DEBBY continued moving north-east inland over eastern Georgia on 6 August, as a tropical storm. On 7 August at 6.00 UTC its centre was located over the North Atlantic Ocean approximately 120 km east of Savannah city (Georgia) and 110 km south of Charleston city (South Carolina), with maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h (tropical storm).
  • After its passage, media report six fatalities, of which five across the Big Bend region (northern Florida) and one more across southern Georgia. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reports, 294 evacuated people in 36 shelters and evacuation orders for 12 counties throughout Florida.
  • DEBBY is forecast to make its second landfall over the central coast of South Carolina (near to the area of the Charleston city) on 8 August very early in the morning (UTC), with maximum sustained winds up to 83 km/h (tropical storm).
  • Over the next 48 hours, very heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over South and North Carolina. A tropical storm warning issued by NOAA is still in force over most of this area.

  • Tropical cyclone DEBBY made its second landfall in the area of Bulls Bay (central coast of South Carolina) on 8 August around 3.00 UTC, as a tropical storm. On 8 August at 6.00 UTC its centre was located inland over the same area approximately 35 km north-east of Charleston city (South Carolina), with maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h (tropical storm).
  • After its passage, according to media, the death toll stands at six (five fatalities across northern Florida and one fatality in southern Georgia). In Florida, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reports, as of 7 August, 142 evacuated people in 12 shelters and evacuation orders for six counties. FEMA also reports 133 evacuated people in fours shelters across Georgia and 96 evacuated people in 11 shelters in South Carolina.
  • DEBBY is forecast to continue moving northward inland over South Carolina and North Carolina on 8-9 August, further weakening.
  • Over the next 24 hours, very heavy rainfall and strong winds are forecast over the North and South Carolina. A tropical storm warning isuued by NOAA is still in force over most of this area.

  • Hurricane DEBBY weakened as a tropical depression and is crossing the eastern USA. On 9 August at 00:00 UTC, its centre was located approximately 11 km north of Winston Salem town in northern North Carolina with maximum sustained winds of 46 km/h.
  • According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), as of 8 August, following its passage over the south-eastern USA, 142 people have been sheltered in Florida, 138 in Georgia, 99 in South Carolina, and 58 others in North Carolina.
  • On the forecast track, DEBBY will continue moving north-east, crossing the north-eastern USA further weakening.
  • Heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected over North and South Carolina, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states. A few tornadoes may occur from eastern North Carolina into Virginia and Maryland.

  • Heavy rainfall, strong wind and thunderstorms have been affecting North Carolina in the south-eastern United States since 8 August, causing six tornados and severe weather-related incidents that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • According to media, as of 11 August, one person died and several structures have been destroyed due to the strong winds caused by the remnants of DEBBY tropical storm, in Lucama town in Wilson County in central-eastern North Carolina. In addition, a dam breach has been reported north of Fayetteville in Cumberland county, in southern North Carolina.
  • On 12-13 August, more rainfall and thunderstorms are still forecast in south-eastern parts of the United States.
