- A 6.3 M earthquake at a depth of 14 km, followed by a 6.3 M and two others of 5.9 M, hit Herat Province on 7 October at 6.41 UTC. The first 6.3 M earthquake was located in Zinda Jan District, 38 km northwest of Herat City.
- Several other aftershocks of magnitude up to 4.9 M have been recorded in the area.
- There are approximately 1.86 million people living in the area most strongly affected by the earthquake. USGS reports 1.216 million people exposed to strong and very strong shaking from the initial earthquake. Initial partner assessments indicate 11,585 people (1,655 families) directly affected to date, and this figure is likely to rise significantly.
- Additionally, an estimated 300 families (2,100 people) are reported to have displaced to Herat City where they are living in abandoned buildings. The number of casualties is expected to rise significantly as search and rescue operations are ongoing throughout the region. As of publication, 516 people are still reported missing. At least 11 villages have been totally destroyed.
