Floods and flood warnings during the last 24 hours (ECHO 17 May 2024)

  • Belgium: warning level 2/3 for several river basins in the East Flanders region.
  • Croatia: threshold level 2/4 on the Sutla river.
  • Finland:warning level 2/3 for Kittilä (Ounasjoki River).
  • Germany:warning level 2/4 at several regions in Baden-Württemberg, and Rheinland-Pfalz.
  • Italy: warning level 3/3 for Veneto region and 2/3 for Lombardia and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions.
  • Slovenia: threshold level 1/1 on the Drava, Dravinja, Loznica, Mestinjscica, Pesnica and Rogatnica rivers.
  • Sweden: warning level 2/3 for Eastern Västerbotten region and river Bodträskån.
  • Switzerland: warning level 3/4 at two regions in the south.
  • Ukraine:threshold level 2/3 on the Desna and Dnipro rivers as reported on 16 May.

Italy - Floods (ECHO 17 May 2024)

  • Persistent rainfalls and heavy thunderstorms, with associated hailstorms have been affecting northern and north-eastern Italy, in particular Lombardy, Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions over the past 48 hours, causing floods and rivers overflow that have resulted in many damages. There are no fatalities reported as of 17 May, 9.52 a.m.
  • Media report, as of 17 May, one person still missing in the Cantù municipality, Como province, Lombardy region due to floods. In addition, media also report three damaged bridges, of which two in Milano province, Lombardy region and one more in Vicenza province, Veneto region and a number of flooded houses across the Treviso and Verona provinces, Veneto region and in Milano and Mantova provinces, Lombardy region.
  • The Copernicus EMS was activated in rapid mapping () on 16 May for the Lombardy region.
  • Over the next 24 hours, no major rainfall is forecasted over northern and north-eastern Italy. The Italian Civil Protection issued a red alert on 17 May for hydraulic and hydrogeological risk over central and southern Veneto region.

USA - Severe weather (ECHO 17 May 2024)

  • Heavy rainfall, strong wind and thunderstorms have been affecting southern Texas in the last few days, causing severe weather-related incidents that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • According to media, as of 17 May, four people died in Houston City due to severe weather-related incidents. More than 900,000 homes have been affected by power outages in Harris County, schools are closed in Houston City and several roads have been flooded.
  • For the next 24 hours, more heavy rainfall is expected over Texas, with very heavy rainfall in the eastern and southern parts of the state.

Brazil - Floods and landslides, update (ECHO 17 May 2024)

  • The number of casualties and the damage are still increasing following the heavy rainfall that has been affecting the Rio Grande do Sul state since early May, causing floods and triggering landslides and mudslides.
  • The Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul reports, as of 16 May, 151 fatalities, 104 people still missing, 806 injured people, nearly 540,200 displaced people - of which around 77,200 evacuated in several shelters -  and a total of approximately 2,282,000 affected people across 461 municipalities throughout the state. The same source reports over 76,600 rescued people across the affected municipalities.
  • The Copernicus Emergency Management Service () was activated in rapid mapping mode on 3 May to provide the damage assessment, producing 17 maps so far. 
  • Over the next 72 hours, heavy rainfall with locally very heavy rainfall is still forecasted over northern Rio Grande do Sul state.

Uruguay - Floods (ECHO 17 May 2024)

  • Following the heavy rainfall and floods that have been affecting nine departments in Uruguay, the number of displaced people has increased.
  • As of 14 May, according to the government of Uruguay, 3,352 people have been displaced, of whom 1,569 in Paysandú department, 934 in Durazno, 594 in Salto, 106 in Artigas, 40 in Rocha, 39 in Soriano, 25 in Cerro Largo, 25 in Treinta y Tres and 19 in Tacuarembó departments.
  • On 18-19 May, drier conditions are expected across the country.
