  • An earthquake of 6.9 M at a depth of 40 km occurred in Papua New Guinea on 23 March at 20.22 UTC (24 March at 6.22 local time). The epicentre was located 38 km north of Ambunti Town, in East Sepik Province, western Papua New Guinea.
  • USGS PAGER estimated that up to 200,000 people were exposed to very strong shaking and up to 200,000 people to very strong shaking.
  • According to media reports, as of 25 March, five people died and at least 1,000 houses have been destroyed. Dozens of villages hit by the earthquake in the northern Papua New Guinea area have already been affected by the flooding of the Sepik River.
  • National authorities are conducting monitoring, assessment, and data collection.
