  • A strong earthquake of 6.8 M at a depth of 22 km occurred in Davao del Sur Province (Davao Region, Mindanao Island) on 15 December at 14.11 local time. The epicentre was 19 km west-southwest of Digos and 6km south of Magsaysay.
  • This is the sixth strong earthquake to hit Mindanao since October and up to 19 aftershocks of up to 5.7M have been reported. 
  • Up to 661,000 people were exposed to very strong shaking and up to 3,736,000 to strong shaking.
  • According to the latest reports, 4 people died and dozens have been injured. Houses, schools and hospitals have collapsed, including a commercial building in Padala where 5 people are trapped. Several areas have been left without power and schools near the epicentre have been suspended.
  • Search and rescue teams are on the ground. DG ECHO and the Philippine Red Cross Chapters were also able to immediately mobilise coordination and basic impact assessments having been already active in the response to the previous earthquakes.
  • DG ECHO's partner ACCORD is also conducting rapid assessments of multistorey buildings and village level assessments are scheduled by the local authorities in the coming days. Immediate needs include food assistance and shelter items.
  • For the next 24 hours, moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms are forecast over Mindanao.

  • According to the National Disaster Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), 7 died following the 6.8 M earthquake in Davao del Sur Province, Mindanao on 15 December.
  • 48 people are injured, 9,565 are housed in 13 temporary evacuation centres and 9,755 have been affected. At least 55 public buildings, 11 schools and 14 bridges have been damaged.
  • There have been as many as 556 aftershocks, 55 of which were felt by the local population.
  • The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued a severe flood advisory for south-east Mindanao (including Davao del Sur Province), with rain and thunderstorms expected over the next 24 hours.

  • After the 6.8 M earthquake in Davao del Sur Province (Davao Region, Mindanao Island) on 15 December, the number of casualties and damage has risen, as aftershocks continue to affect the area. 
  • According to the National Disaster Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), 9 people are dead, one person is missing and 111 people are injured. 32,000 people are displaced (14,073 in 24 evacuation centres) and 108,471 affected. 14,000 houses, 128 schools and 14 bridges are damaged.
  • According to initial field assessments by DG ECHO partners, some of the evacuation centres and displacement sites in Kiblawan, Hagonoy, and Padada are in need of emergency shelter (plastic sheets), drinking water supply and sanitation facilities.
  • A severe flood advisory is still in effect for south-east Mindanao.

  • As of 19 December, 11 people died, one is missing and 195 have been injured following the 6.8 M earthquake in Davao del Sur Province (Mindanao Island) on 15 December.
  • A total of 33,044 people have been displaced (14,993 sheltered in 24 temporary evacuation centres) and 121,221 affected in Davao Region. More than 14,000 houses and 290 schools have been damaged.
  • Local authorities are continuously conducting damage assessment and providing emergency relief.
  • For the next 24 hours, moderate to heavy rain with isolated thunderstorms and strong winds are forecast across Mindanao.
