Floods and flood warnings during the last 24 hours (ECHO 21 May 2024)

  • Belgium: warning level 2/3 for Flanders region.
  • Finland:warning level 2/3 for Kittilä (Ounasjoki River), Kolari (Tornionjoki River), Pello (Tornionjoki River) and Ylitornio (Tornionjoki River).
  • Germany: warning level 2/4 for several regions in Rheinland-Pfalz.
  • Italy:warning level 3/3 for Lombardia and Veneto regions, 2/3 for Emilia Romagna region.
  • Sweden:warning level 2/3 for river Lower Kalixälven, river Lower Torneälven and river Muonioälven.
  • Ukraine:threshold level 2/3 on the Dnipro river.

Italy - Seismic activity (ECHO 21 May 2024)

  • On 20 May, an increase on the seismic activity occurred in the area of Campi Flegrei, a large volcanic caldera situated in the western part of Naples city, southern Italy, resulting in light damage to some buildings and leading to evacuations.
  • The Vesuvian Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), recorded at least 150 earthquakes in the area with a maximum magnitude of 4.4 M localised in the Solfatara area, almost 3 km close to the Pozzuoli Town, at a depth of 2.6 km.
  • Media report, as of 21 May, the evacuation of 35 families for precautionary reasons, as well as self-evacuations, in the Pozzuoli area where the Italian Civil Protection provided two shelters to assist the population. In addition, the schools in the municipalities of Pozzuoli, Bacoli, and two districts of Naples will be closed on 21 May.

Indonesia - Volcanic unrest, update (ECHO 21 May 2024)

  • The activity on Ibu volcano, located in North Maluku province, eastern Indonesia continues, and in the latest huge eruption of 20 May the ash plume reached 5 km above the summit of the crater.
  • According to the National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB), 1,554 people have been evacuated to a number of evacuation points.
  • The alert level is at IV - the highest level- people cannot enter in a 4km radius from the crater of the volcano.

Sri Lanka - Severe weather (ECHO 21 May 2024)

  • Since 15 May, heavy rain with localized thunderstorms has been affecting almost 10 districts of Sri Lanka, resulting in casualties and damage.
  • According to the National Disaster Relief Services Centre (NDRSC), one person has been injured in the Ratnapura district, almost 21,400 people have been affected and 147 houses damaged.
  • Frot the next 24 hours, showers or thundershowers will occur in western, Sabaragamuwa, central and north-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

Kenya - Floods, update (ECHO 21 May 2024)

  • Since 1 March, heavy rainfall has been hitting most of Kenya, causing rivers overflow, particularly in the Tana, Daua, Ewaso and Mara rivers, floods, flash floods, and triggering landslides and mudslides that have resulted in an increasing number of casualties and damage.
  • According to UN OCHA, as of 17 May, 291 people have died, 75 are still missing, and 188 have been injured. Moreover, 278,380 people have been displaced and 412,763 affected.
  • Search and rescue operations are ongoing, particularly in Narok, West Pokot, Nyeri, Siaya and Kirinyaga counties.
  • Over the next 48 hours, more heavy rainfall is still forecasted over western Kenya.
