  • An earthquake of 6.6 M at a depth of 10 km occurred in the southern Caribbean Sea close to the coasts of north-western Colombia and south-eastern Panama. The epicentre was located approximately 36 km north-east of Capurganá village (Choco Department, north-western Colombia) which is very close to the border with Panama.
  • An aftershock of 4.9 M has been recorded in the area. According to the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), there was no tsunami threat for the Colombian Caribbean Coast after the seismic event.
  • USGS PAGER estimates that up to 12,000 people were exposed to strong shaking.
  • According to media reports, there have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake.
