  • The number of casualties has risen following the 7.2 M earthquake in Nippes Department (southern Haiti) on 14 August at 12.29 UTC.
  • According to the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and Haiti's Civil Protection agency (DGPC) at least 800 people have died, 2,800 others have been injured and 6,300 families affected. In addition, more than 12,200 houses have been destroyed or damaged. Figures are likely to increase significantly in the coming hours and days. Search and rescue operations areongoing. 
  • Tropical storm GRACE is moving west-northwest over the northern Caribbean Sea and will cross southern Haiti this evening bringing heavy rain and strong winds over the next 24 hours.
  • The EU Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service was activated to support the damage assessment () and six maps have been produced so far.

  • The Haitian Civil Protection Agency reports 1,419 fatalities after the 7.2 M earthquake in Nippes Department (southern Haiti) on 14 August. The Department most affected is Sud with 1,133 fatalities, followed by Grand Anse (162), Nippes (122) and Nord Ouest (2).
  • In addition, more than 6,900 people have been injured and more than 83,000 houses damaged or destroyed. The passage of Tropical Cyclone GRACE is complicating rescue efforts and the situation of those that have been displaced.
  • On 16 August, Haiti requested assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism for emergency medical teams, water health and sanitation (WASH) needs and shelter items.
  • The EU Copernicus emergency satelite mapping service was activated to support the damage assessment () and six maps have been produced so far.

  • At least 2,000 fatalities and 9,900 injuries have been reported by the Haitian Civil Protection Agency following the 7.2 M earthquake of 14 August in the Nippes Department. In Sud Department, 1,597 people have died, 205 in Grand’Anse, 137 in Nippes and two in Nord-Ouest.
  • On 16 August, Haiti requested assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism for emergency medical teams, water health and sanitation (WASH) needs and shelter items. 
  • An EU Civil Protection Team (EUCPT) consisting of 12 emergency management experts and two Liaison Officers from the Emergency Response Coordination Centre () will deploy to support the national authorities and coordinate EU assistance in response to the quake. The mission will be supported by a Technical Assistance and Support Team (TAST) from Swedish Civil Protection ().
  • On 16 August, the European Commission announced EUR 3 milion in immediate humanitarian financing to support its partners in their response to the disaster.

  • The death toll following the earthquake of 14 August has raised to 2,189 people while 332 are still missing, and more than 12,200 have been injured, as reported by the Haitian Civil Protection.
  • At least 52,000 houses have been destroyed and more than 77,000 damaged.
  • On 16 August, DG ECHO mobilised €3 million in emergency humanitarian funding to address the most urgent needs of the affected population.
  • On 16 August, the Government of Haiti sent a request for international assistance to the EU Delegation in Port-au-Prince. France, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden have already offered in-kind assistance via the Union Civil Protection Mechanism. An EU Civil Protection Team was deployed to support the national authorities and coordinate the incoming EU assistance. The mission will be supported by a Technical Assistance and Support Team from the Swedish Civil Protection (MSB).

On August 14th 2021, 12:29 UTC (08:29 local time), a M 7.2 earthquake occurred in the Hispaniola island with an epicentre approximately 125 kilometres west of Port-au-Prince, 2 13 km south east of Petit Trou de Nippes (Nippes Department). Several aftershocks are occurring, worsening the situation. The population of the three most affected departments (Nippes, Grand'Anse and Sud) represents around 16% of the country's total population, estimated at 11.4 million.
