  • Following the earthquake of 6.4 M that occurred in Sonitpur District (northern Assam State, north-eastern India) on 28 April, casualties and damage have been reported by national authorities.
  • According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), two fatalities occurred, indirectly related to the seismic event, and ten have been injured. Cracks have been registered in many private and public buildings but there are no reports of severe damage like collapse of building or disruption of any major infrastructure.
  • The National Center of Seismology of India recorded more than 15 aftershocks in the area with magnitude up to 4.7 M. The damage assessment, conducted by the national authorities, is ongoing.
  • On 29-30 April moderate rain with thunderstorms is forecast across Assam State.

  • An earthquake of 6.4 M at a depth of 17 km (according to the National Center of Seismology of India) occurred in Sonitpur District (northern Assam State, north-eastern India) on 28 April at 02.21 UTC (07.51 local time). The epicentre was located approximately 10 km north-west of Dhekiajuli Town (Sonitpur District, Assam State).
  • The earthquake was followed by six aftershocks in the same area with magnitude up to 4.7 M. USGS PAGER estimates that up to 427,000 people were exposed to very strong shaking and up to 3,637,000 to strong shaking.
  • According to media reports, there are no casualties so far but damage to several buildings and roads have been reported across the State, particularly in Sonitpur District. The earthquake was felt in the entire northeast region, including neighbouring Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal.
  • On 28-29 April light to moderate rain is expected across Assam State.
