Hurricane Rafael, Caribbean, Early November 2024Tropical Cyclone Rafael passed between Jamaica and the Cayman islands on 5 November 2024, strengthening as it continued northwest toward western Cuba where it made landfall at Playa Majana as a Category 2 Hurricane on 06 November. Cuba UNCT Cuba reported nearly 3.5 million people were exposed to the storm for almost three hours as it swept across Cuba with . Over 260,000 people were evacuated in 7 provinces and special municipalities. As of 08 November, no loss of human life was reported. Sustained winds of 185 km/h caused considerable damages, in particular in Artemisa, Mayabeque and Havana Provinces. Heavy rain triggered flooding and landslides. Rainfall exceeding 100 mm was reported across 37 locations in Sancti Spíritus, Cienfuegos, Matanzas, Mayabeque, and Havana, UNCT said. The San Antonio de los Baños River broke its banks in Artemisa Province. Some communities were left isolated after floods and landslides cut roads in Mayabeque. Jamaica Local media in Jamaica reported 2 people died in a road accident caused by flooding in St Catherine parish during the storm.
