  • Since the beginning of the Gu Rainy Season (from April to June), heavy rainfall, floods and flash floods have affected 170,000 people (of whom 140,000 have been displaced) across several areas of Somalia as reported by UN OCHA.
  • The worst hit areas are Baardheere District in Gedo Region, (Jubaland State), and Baidoa District in Bay Region (South West State).
  • According to the same source, more than 21 people died after flash floods that occurred in Baardheere District (Jubaland State, southern Somalia) on 21-24 March. In the same District, four health and nutrition centres were damaged as well as six primary schools and a secondary school.
  • Humanitarian partners are conducting the emergency response for the affected States (Galmudug State, Hirshabelle State, South West State, Jubaland State).
  • For the next 24 hours, moderate rain is expected over the northern and southern areas of Somalia.

  • Since the start of the Gu Rainy Season (from April to June), floods have impacted several parts of Somalia, particularly the Belet Weyne District in the Hirshabelle State, and Baardheere District in Jubaland State, leading to casualties and damage.
  • According to the latest reports of UN OCHA, initial estimates indicate that at least 22 people died, 219,000 have been displaced, and 460,470 were affected across 17 Districts since mid-March. In addition, hospitals, health centres and mobile clinics have been inundated; shelters, latrines, and farmland destroyed; livestock washed away; schools damaged and temporarily closed across the country.
  • Humanitarian partners are conducting the emergency response for those most affected.
  • For the next 24 hours, scattered light rain is expected over north-eastern Somalia.

  • Since the start of the Gu Rainy Season (from mid-March), several parts of the country have been experiencing heavy rainfall and consequent floods that resulted in an increasing number of displacements.
  • According to UN OCHA, 247,000 people have been displaced while 468,000 have been affected. The worst affected District is Belet Weyne where five people died and 210,000 have been displaced (as of mid-May).
  • In addition, in some parts of the country, the flood waters are receding but stagnant waters in some parts of the country are hindering the return home of the displaced, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases.
  • Humanitarian partners have stepped up the emergency response for those most affected.
  • For the next 24 hours, light rain is expected over parts of north-western Somalia close to the border with western Ethiopia.
Somalia, March 2023UNOCHA reported light to moderate rains in several areas of Somalia from around 13 March 2023, signalling an early start of the Gu rainy season, which usually ruins from April to June. Galmudug State Flash flooding cut off electricity in Cadaado and Dhuusamarreeb towns on 22 March. Roads were damaged and some communities were left isolated. Others were forced to evacuate. In a report of 03 April, UN OCHA said 15,000 people were displaced from their homes in Dhuusamarreeb due to flash flooding on 22 March, but nearly half have returned since the flooding subsided. Jubaland State Heavy rain, especially in the Ethiopian highlands, has increased the risk of the Juba River breaking its bank. More than 10 people were reportedly killed and thousands of others were affected as heavy rains inundated Baardheere District. Around 8,000 residents of two IPD camps were affected. Puntland State Flash floods in Jalam town, Burtinle District, displaced hundreds and damaged property. UN OCHA also reported around 900 families were affected in Jalam and other areas.
