Somalia - Floods, update (ECHO 14 Apr 2023)Fri, 14 Apr 2023 10:24
- Since the beginning of the Gu Rainy Season (from April to June), heavy rainfall, floods and flash floods have affected 170,000 people (of whom 140,000 have been displaced) across several areas of Somalia as reported by UN OCHA.
- The worst hit areas are Baardheere District in Gedo Region, (Jubaland State), and Baidoa District in Bay Region (South West State).
- According to the same source, more than 21 people died after flash floods that occurred in Baardheere District (Jubaland State, southern Somalia) on 21-24 March. In the same District, four health and nutrition centres were damaged as well as six primary schools and a secondary school.
- Humanitarian partners are conducting the emergency response for the affected States (Galmudug State, Hirshabelle State, South West State, Jubaland State).
- For the next 24 hours, moderate rain is expected over the northern and southern areas of Somalia.

- Since the start of the Gu Rainy Season (from April to June), floods have impacted several parts of Somalia, particularly the Belet Weyne District in the Hirshabelle State, and Baardheere District in Jubaland State, leading to casualties and damage.
- According to the latest reports of UN OCHA, initial estimates indicate that at least 22 people died, 219,000 have been displaced, and 460,470 were affected across 17 Districts since mid-March. In addition, hospitals, health centres and mobile clinics have been inundated; shelters, latrines, and farmland destroyed; livestock washed away; schools damaged and temporarily closed across the country.
- Humanitarian partners are conducting the emergency response for those most affected.
- For the next 24 hours, scattered light rain is expected over north-eastern Somalia.
