North West Province and Gauteng, South Africa, January 2022Media reported residents along the banks of the Vaal River in Bloemhof and Christiana in the North West Province evacuated their homes on 19 January 2022. The Department of Water and Sanitation opened flood gates of the Bloemhof and Vaal dams from around 17 January to ease pressure from the rising Vaal River. Heavy rain on 19 January caused flash flooding in Centurion, Gauteng. Roads and bridges were closed.
