  • A new tropical cyclone named DANA formed over the eastern Bay of Bengal in the morning (UTC) of 23 October and started moving north-west toward eastern India, strenghtening. On 24 October at 0.00 its centre was located over the northern Bay of Bengal, approximately 270 south-est of the Puri city, eastern Odisha state, with maximum sustained winds of 111 km/h (tropical storm).
  • DANA is expected to make landfall over the area between the Puri city and the Digha city, far south-western West Bengal state on 25 October before 12.00, with maximum sustained winds up to 120 km/h (tropical cyclone).
  • Over the next 72 hours, very heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over the West Bengal state, most of the Odisha state and southern Jharkhand state.

  • Tropical cyclone DANA made landfall over the area between the Paradeep city and the Balasore city, far north-western Odisha state, near the border with the West Bengal state very late in the evening (UTC) on 24 October, with maximum sustained winds up to 120 km/h (tropical cyclone). On 25 October at 3.00 UTC its centre was located inland approximately 35 south-west of the Balasore city, with maximum sustained winds up to 90 km/h (tropical storm).
  • Its passage caused heavy rainfall, strong winds, storm surges, floods and severe weather-related incidents that have resulted in population displacements and damage. Sphere India reports, as of 24 October, more than 500,000 evacuated people in 7,285 shelters across Odisha and nearly 243,400 evacuated people in several shelters throughout West Bengal.
  • DANA is expected to continue westward inland across central Odisha state, further weakening and dissipating in the morning on 26 October.
  • Over the next 48 hours, very heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over most of West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand states.
