  • A new tropical storm named MICHAUNG formed over the western Bay of Bengal on 3 December very early in the morning (UTC) and started moving north-west toward central-eastern India. On 4 December at 6.00 UTC its centre was located over the sea approximately 85 km east of the border between Tamil Nadu and Andra Pradesh States, with maximum sustained winds of 102 km/h (tropical storm).
  • On the forecast track, MICHAUNG is forecast to make landfall over the area of coastal City of Nizampatnam, central-northern Andra Pradesh State on 5 December very early in the afternoon (UTC), with maximum sustained winds up to 92 km/h (tropical storm).
  • Local authorities have set up 4,967 aid camps and 121 safe shelters. 11 relief camps in Tamil Nadu are providing refuge to 685 individuals from vulnerable locations. 13 teams from the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed to Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
  • Over the next 48 hours, very heavy rainfall and strong winds are forecast over the northern Tamil Nadu and the whole Andra Pradesh States. Storm surges are also forecast over the central and northern coastal Andra Pradesh State.

  • Tropical storm MICHAUNG is very close to the eastern coast of Andra Pradesh, south-eastern India, and on 5 December at 3.00 UTC its centre was located over the sea approximately 40 km northeast of Kavali, 80 km north-northeast of Nellore, with maximum sustained winds of 90-100 km/h (tropical storm).
  • According to media reports, at least nine people died in Tamil Nadu State due to severe weather-related incidents, as heavy rains affected Chennai and surrounding areas. In Andra Pradesh State, authorities evacuated over 9,000 people to 236 relief camps in eight coastal districts and were preparing to evacuate 28,000 others.
  • Central Water Commission issued a red alert for extreme flood situation in Chittoor and Nellore districts of Andhra Pradesh.
  • MICHAUNG is forecast to move northward, make landfall over the northeastern coast of Andra Pradesh and continue inland weakening and dissipating on 6 December.
  • For the next 24 hours, heavy rain and strong winds are forecast over most parts of Andra Pradesh, northern Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Odisha. Red warnings for strong winds and heavy rain are in effect for Andra Pradesh and Telangana.

  • Tropical storm MICHAUNG passed over the central Andra Pradesh and the neighbouring eastern Telangana States on 5 December and  in the very early morning (UTC) of  6 December as a tropical storm and as a tropical depression. On 6 December at 3.00 UTC the remnants of MICHAUNG was located in the area of southern Chhattisgarh, southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh States.
  • Its passage caused very heavy rainfall across the four aforementioned states and the Tamil Nadu State. Media report, as of 6 December, 16 fatalities across Tamil Nadu. In addition, a total of approximately 390,000 affected people were reported across the Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
  • Over the next 48 hours, more heavy rainfall with locally very heavy rainfall is forecast over central-eastern India.
