  • A new tropical cyclone named IDALIA formed over the western Caribbean Sea on 26 August and started moving north toward the western Cuba and north-western Florida (USA). On 28 August at 6.00 UTC its centre was located over the sea approximately 260 km south-west of the westernmost part of Cuba, with maximum sustained winds of 95 km/h (tropical storm).
  • Western Cuba could see 8 to 15 cm of rain, with isolated amounts up to 25 cm.
  • On the forecast track, IDALIA is expected to continue moving north-east, strenghtening, and to make landfall over north-western Florida on 30 August late in the morning (UTC), with maximum sustained winds up to 175 km/h (Cat. 2 Hurricane).
  • Heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over northern and western Florida on 29-30 August. The Governor of Florida declared a state of emergecny over 33 Counties across the area, according to FEMA, as of 27 August.

  • Tropical cyclone IDALIA continued moving over the northern Caribbean Sea on 28 August, towards the far western Cuba, and entered into the Gulf of Mexico. On 29 August at 6.00 UTC, its centre was located over the sea approximately 50 km west of the westernmost part of Cuba, with maximum sustained winds of 110 km/h (tropical storm).
  • On the forecast track, IDALIA is expected to continue moving north-east, strenghthening, and to make landfall over north-western Florida on 30 August early in the afternoon (UTC), with maximum sustained winds up to 195 km/h (Cat. 3 Hurricane).
  • Heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over the whole Florida Gulf Coast and the westernmost part of Cuba on 29-30 August. NOAA has issued a hurricane warning for the interested coast of Florida and a tropical storm warning for the western coast of Cuba.
  • The state of emergency declared from the Government of Florida on 27 August is still in force.

  • Tropical cyclone IDALIA made landfall over north-western Florida as a category 3 hurricane on 30 August in the morning, and crossed north-east over Georgia and southern South Carolina, weakening as a tropical storm. On 31 August at 6.00 UTC, its centre was located inland approximately 30 km south-west of Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, with maximum sustained winds of 95 km/h.
  • Media reported two deaths in Florida and one in Georgia. Some 470,000 people in Georgia and Florida were without power, and several flights have been cancelled. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, as of 30 August, almost 5,000 people have been sheltered in Florida.
  • IDALIA will move close to the coast of South Carolina and then just offshore from North Carolina on 31 August, after which it will move over the western Atlantic on 1-2 September, dissipating. 
  • For the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected over central Florida, South Carolina and eastern North Carolina. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for parts of North Carolina close to the Virginia border.

  • After its landfall over north-western Florida on 30 August, Cat. 3 Hurricane IDALIA continued moving north-east inland over eastern Georgia and the coast of South Carolina, weakening, on 30-31 August. On 1 September at 6.00 UTC its centre was located over the North Atlantic Ocean well off the coast of the Carolinas and 450 km west of Bermuda, with maximum sustained winds of 100 km/h (tropical storm).
  • The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reports as of 31 August three fatalities, of which two in Florida and one more in Georgia. FEMA also reports 4,924 evacuated people in 114 shelters across Florida and four evacuated people in one shelter in Georgia. Mandatory evacuation orders are still in force for 11 Counties in Florida and some areas across Georgia.
  • IDALIA is expected to continue moving west over the Ocean, further weakening, and to pass near Bermuda (approximately 100 km south) on 3 September early in the morning (UTC), with maximum sustained winds up to 75 km/h.
  • Over the next 24 hours, moderate rainfall and winds are still forecast over eastern North Carolina.
