  • Since mid-March severe flooding has affected most of the country, particularly Golestan, Fars, Khuzestan and Lorestan Provinces, causing casualties and widespread damage.
  • According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, as of 9 April, the death toll stands at 70 people, 1 076 were reported injured, at least 500 000 displaced, around 10 million affected and approximately 2 million in need of assistance.
  • The European Commission has announced EUR 1.2 million in humanitarian aid, to support the response.
  • On 8 April the Government of Iran issued an official request for assistance, thus activating the European Civil Protection Mechanism. On 9 April, the European Commission's Emergency Management Service was activated, to support rescue operations with satellite maps.
  • The severe weather situation increased the risk of dam overflow across western Iran. Excess water was released from the Karkheh dam (Khuzestan province) to prevent its failure, causing flooding to downstream areas. Several villages were preventively evacuated.
  • In the next 24 hours, moderate rainfall is forecast over northern provinces and Khuzestan.
