Italy - Stromboli Volcano eruption (ECHO 20 May 2021)Thu, 20 May 2021 16:15

  • On 19 May at 12.51 UTC the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology and Università of Firenze reported the collapse of one of the cones in the North-Eastern sector of the crater area of the Stromboli volcano (Aeolian Islands). A pyroclastic flow was observed along the "Sciara del Fuoco" (northern flank of the volcano) that reached the sea and propagated over 1 km from the coastline. An eruptive column has risen 1,5-2 km.
  • Following the collapse effusive activity started and the lava flow reached the sea soon after.
  • As a consequence of the event, a sea level change of about 60 cm has been detected by the tide gauge located in Ginostra a few minutes later the event.
  • According to media reports, as of 20 May, no casualties or injuries have been reported.
  • On 19 May at 14.20 UTC, a Volcanic Ash Advisory (VAA) has been issued by the Toulouse VAA Centre, with the aviation colour code orange.

Updates on volcanic activity (Smithsonian)

The Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report provides information about global volcanism on a weekly basis. Latest Stromboli report has been published on 28 Apr 2021 09:18.
INGV reported that during 19-25 April activity at Stromboli was characterized by ongoing explosive activity from Area N (North Crater area) and in Area C-S (South-Central Crater area), though sometime weather conditions prevented visual observations. Explosions from two vents in the N1 vent (Area N) ejected lapilli and bombs 250 m high, and produced minor ash emissions. Explosions at N2 vents (Area N) averaged 11-14 events per hour. Periods of visible spattering were most notable on 24 April. Explosions from at least three vents in Area C-S occurred at a rate of 1-5 events per hour and ejected coarse material more than 250 m high. Source: Sezione di Catania - Osservatorio Etneo (INGV)
