Heavy rainfall has been affecting south-eastern Brazil, in particular the Santa Catarina state since 16 January, causing floods and triggering landslides that have resulted in casualties and damage.
Media report, as of 20 January, one fatality in the area of the Praia de Palmas city, coastal Santa Catarina state. In addition, media also report more than 1,000 displaced and over 2,000 rescued people across 27 municipalities throughout the coastal area of the state, where the worst affected are Florianópolis, Balneário Camboriú, Camboriú and Itapema municipalities. National authorities declared the state of emergency for 13 municipalities.
Over the next 48 hours, more heavy rainfall is still forecast over most of the already affected Santa Catarina state.
