  • A new Tropical cyclone named FRANKLIN formed over the eastern Caribbean Sea on 20 August and started moving toward the Hispaniola Island. On 22 August at 6.00 UTC its centre was located over the sea approximately 380 km south of the Bani Town (just west of Santo Domingo Capital City, Dominican Republic), with maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h (tropical storm).
  • On the forecast track, FRANKLIN is forecast to continue moving northward over the Caribbean Sea, strenghtening, and it is expected to make landfall west of the greater Santo Domingo area on 23 August in the afternoon (UTC), with maximum sustained winds up to 102 km/h (tropical storm).
  • Over the next 48 hours, heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over central and eastern Hispaniola Island. NOAA has issued a Tropical Storm Warning over this area.

  • On 22 August, tropical cyclone FRANKLIN continued moving northward over the Caribbean Sea toward the Hispaniola Island, slightly weakening. On 23 August at 6.00 UTC its centre was located over the sea approximately 140 km south of the Barahona Town, west of Santo Domingo Capital City, Dominican Republic, with maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h (tropical storm).
  • On the forecast track, FRANKLIN continues moving northward over the Caribbean Sea and it is expected to make landfall over the area of Barahona Town on 23 August early in the afternoon (UTC), with maximum sustained winds up to 75 km/h.
  • Over the next 48 hours, heavy rainfall is forecast over most of Hispaniola Island. NOAA has issued a Tropical Storm Warning over this area, including the whole southern coast of the Island.

  • Tropical cyclone FRANKLIN made landfall over the area of Barahona Town (Dominican Republic) on 23 August late in the morning (UTC), with maximum sustained winds up to 83 km/h (tropical storm) and continued moving northward, slightly weakening. On 24 August at 6.00 UTC its centre was located over the North Atlantic Ocean, approximately 60 km east of Cockburn Town (Turks and Caicos) and 200 km north of the northern coast of Dominican Republic, with maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h (tropical storm).
  • Media report, as of 24 August, one fatality, two persons still missing and around 200 displaced people across the Dominican Republic.
  • FRANKLIN continues northward over the North Atlantic Ocean, strenghtening, and it is expected to pass close to Bermuda between 28-29 August, with maximum sustained winds up to 175 km/h (Cat. 2 Hurricane).
  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall is forecast over most of Dominican Republic and the whole Turks and Caicos. NOAA has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for most of the coast of Dominican Republic and Turks and Caicos.

  • After its passage over the central-eastern Hispaniola Island on 23 August, tropical storm FRANKLIN continued moving northward over the North Atlantic Ocean, slightly strenghtening, and passed close to Turks and Caicos on 24 August. On 25 August at 3.00 UTC its centre was located over the North Atlantic Ocean approximately 1,000 km south-southwest of Bermuda, with maximum sustained winds of 93 km/h (tropical storm).
  • Media and WHO PAHO report, as of 25 August, one confirmed fatality, two persons still missing, two injured people, approximately 600 evacuated people (of which around 300 in 15 evacuation centres) and nearly 550 damaged houses across the Dominican Republic, where the most affected area are the Provinces of San Cristóbal, Pedernales, Barahona and Santo Domingo.
  • On the forecast track, FRANKLIN is expected to strenghten and to pass close to Bermuda on 29 August, with maximum sustained winds up to 175 km/h (Cat. 2 Hurricane).
