  • On 26 August, tropical cyclone SHANSHAN continued moving north and strenghtening over the far northern Philippine Sea and over the northern Ryukyu islands (far southern Japan) toward the Kyushu island (south-western Japan).
  • According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), on 27 August at 6.00 UTC, its centre was located offshore, approximately 310 km south of the Kagoshima city area (southern Kyushu island), with maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h (typhoon).
  • As of 27 August, national authorities have issued a number of evacuation orders across the Kyushu island.
  • SHANSHAN is forecast to continue moving northward and to make landfall over the western Kagoshima prefecture on 29 August early in the morning (UTC) with maximum sustained winds up to approximately 175 km/h.
  • Over the next 96 hours, heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over southern (including the Ryukyu islands) and central Japan.

  • Tropical cyclone SHANSHAN continued moving north over the northern Ryukyu islands (far southern Japan) toward the Kyushu island (south-western Japan) on 27 August, further strenghtening. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), on 28 August at 5.00 UTC, its centre was located offshore just south of the Yakushima island (far northern Ryukyu islands), approximately 170 km south of the Kagoshima city area (southern Kyushu island), with maximum sustained winds of 205 km/h (typhoon).
  • Its approach toward Japan caused already heavy rainfall across some areas of the country. Media reports, as of 28 August, three missing people in the area of Gamagori city (Aichi prefecture, southern Japan) due to a landslide occurred on 27 August in the afternoon (UTC).
  • SHANSHAN is forecast to make landfall over the area of Satsumasendai city (western Kagoshima prefecture, close to the neighbouring Kumamoto prefecture) on 29 August early in the afternoon (UTC) with maximum sustained winds up to approximately 148 km/h.
  • Over the next 72 hours, very heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over the northern Ryukyu islands, the whole Kyushu island and over central Japan.

  • Tropical cyclone SHANSHAN is moving over southern Kyushu island after it crossed the northern Ryukyu islands on 28 August. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), on 29 August at 5.00 UTC, its centre was located approximately 28 km east of Nagasaki city (Nagasaki Prefecture, western Kyushu) with maximum sustained winds of 111 km/h.
  • Following its activity, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency reports five injured people in Kagoshima prefecture and two others in Aichi prefecture while media also report three fatalities and one missing person.
  • SHANSHAN is forecast to continue moving over north-eastern Kyushu on 29-30 August, after that it will cross southern Ryukyu island where it could dissipate on 31 August.
  • Over the next 48 hours, very heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over the northern Ryukyu islands, Kyushu island and southern Honshu. Storm surge and heavy rain warnings are in effect over eastern Kyushu and southern Honshu.

  • Tropical cyclone SHANSHAN passed over the central-northern Kyushu island (south-western Japan) on 29 August, weakening. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), on 30 August at 6.00 UTC, its centre was located over the sea between the northern Shikoku island and the far south-western Honshu island, approximately 50 km south of the Hiroshima city area (southern Kyushu island), with maximum sustained winds of 74 km/h (tropical storm).
  • Its passage caused very heavy rainfall across some areas of the country. Media reports, as of 30 August, three fatalities, one person still missing, around 75 injured people and more than 160 damaged buildings across the affected area. National authorities issued evacuation orders for 5.2 million people across several prefectures.
  • SHANSHAN is forecast to continue moving eastward inland over the Shikoku island on 30-31 August, further weakening and becoing a tropical depression.
  • Over the next 72 hours, very heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over the whole Kyushu island, the central and southern Honshu island and the whole Shikoku island.

  • Tropical cyclone SHANSHAN passed over the Shikoku island and the central-southern Honshu island on 30 August - 1 September as a tropical depression, further weakening and dissipating. Its passage caused very heavy rainfall across a number of prefectures of the country.

  • The Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) reports, as of 3 September, eight fatalities, of which three across the Aichi prefecture, two more in the Fukuoka prefecture and one each in Kagoshima, Tokushima and Saga prefectures. In addition, FDMA also reports 127 injured people and approximately 2,200 damaged buildings across the affected area, where the most affected prefectures are Miyazaki, Oita, Shizuoka and Gifu.
  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall is still forecast over most of the Honshu island.
