Papua New Guinea - Volcanic eruption Thu, 21 Oct 2021 00:00

After a series of sporadic small ash emissions in September, the Manam volcano located in the Bismarck Sea (Papua New Guinea) erupted around 20.00 UTC on 19 October.
According to the Smithsonian Institution, the large explosion at Southern Crater produced ash plumes up to 15.2 km.
According to media reports, there are approximately 2,000 people living on the island, and local authorities are monitoring the situation and arranging evacuations for residents.
On 21 October at 5.00 UTC, a Volcanic Ash Advisory (VAA) has been issued by the Darwin VAA Centre, with the aviation colour code red.
