  • On 9 December at 7.03 UTC, Kanlaon volcano,  located on Negros Island, increased its activity with an explosion that produced a plume 3 km high above the summit of the crater and pyroclastic flows descended the slopes on the southeastern flanks of the volcano.
  • According to the national authorities, more than 6,500 have been displaced, most of them have been evacuated in 13 evacuation centres located in the Western and Central Visayas region.
  • As of 10 December, at 2.00 UTC, the alert level was raised from 2 (increasing unrest) to 3 (magmatic unrest). All local government units are advised to evacuate people living in the 6 km radius from the summit of the volcano.

  • In the recent 24 hours, Kanlaon volcano, located in Negros Island, central Philippines continued its activity characterised by continuous degassing with occasional ash emission, drifting westward, 31 volcanic earthquakes and a sulfur dioxide flux of 4,121 tonnes.
  • According to the national authorities, more than 14,518 people have been displaced, most of them (12,368) have been evacuated in 29 evacuation centres located in the Western and Central Visayas region and almost 38,000 others have been affected over the aforementioned regions.
  • The alert level stands at 3 (magmatic unrest), which means that a magmatic eruption has begun and may progress to further explosive eruptions. All local government units are advised to evacuate people living within the 6 km radius from the summit of the volcano.

  • According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, in the past 24 hours, Kanlaon volcano, Negros Island, central Philippines recorded two volcanic earthquakes and a sulfur dioxide flux of more than 7,000 tonnes.
  • The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reports almost 18,000 displaced people, 15,334 evacuated in 27 evacuation centres, and 40,489 affected people across Western and Central Visayas regions.
  • National authorities are providing help and assistance for those affected. The alert level stands at 3 (magmatic unrest). All local government units are advised to evacuate the 6 km radius from the summit of the volcano and must be prepared for additional evacuation if activity warrants.

The Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report provides information about global volcanism on a weekly basis. Latest Kanlaon report has been published on 27 Nov 2024 07:16.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a continuing eruption at Kanlaon during 19-25 November. The seismic network recorded 3-23 daily volcanic earthquakes, and sulfur dioxide emissions ranged from 5,125 to 8,040 tonnes per day; weather clouds obscured views on 19 November. Moderate gas-and-steam emissions high as 300 m above the summit and drifted SW and WSW. There was one ash emission event on 21 November and two on 23 November, with each lasting 4-8 minutes long. According to the Tokyo VAAC the ash emissions rose as high as 2.7 km (9,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted W and SW. The Alert Level remained at 2 (on a scale of 0-5) and PHIVOLCS reminded the public to remain outside of the 4-km-radius Permanent Danger Zone and warned pilots not to fly close to the volcano.
