  • A new tropical cyclone named YUN-YEUNG formed over the central Philippine Sea on 4 September and is moving northeast towards the central-southern coast of Honshu Island. On 7 September at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located over the sea approximately 400 km south of the central Wakayama Prefecture, Honshu Island, with maximum sustained winds of 74 km/h (tropical storm).
  • YUN-YEUNG is forecast to continue north-east slightly strengthening, it is forecast to pass close to the Izu Islands, and to make landfall in an area close to Tokyo on 8 September with maximum winds up to 60 km/h.
  • For the next 48 hours, heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surge are forecast over Izu Islands, and central southern Honshu Island (particularly in the area of Tokyo). Heavy rain and strong wind warnings are in effect for most of the Prefectures of the aforementioned regions.

  • Tropical cyclone YUN-YEUNG continued northward over the West Pacific Ocean toward the central Honshu Island on 7 September, as a tropical storm. On 8 September at 3.00 UTC, its centre was located over the Ocean approximately 170 km south of the border between Aichi and Shizuoka Prefectures, with maximum sustained winds of 83 km/h (tropical storm).
  • YUN-YEUNG is expected to make landfal over the Toyohashi City area (south-eastern Aichi Prefecture) on 8 September late in the morning (UTC), with maximum sustained winds up to 75 km/h. After that, it is expected to pass over the central Honshu Island on 8-9 September, further weakening.
  • Over the next 48 hours, heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over the central and northern Honshu Island.
  • The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued warnings for heavy rainfall, floods and landslides over the Greater Tokyo Area and the neighbouring Chiba Prefecture. A number of preventive evacuation orders have been already issued for this area.

  • The passage of the tropical storm YUN-YEUNG over the central Honshu Island, west of the Greater Tokyo area, on 8-9 September, caused very heavy rainfall, strong winds, floods and landslides that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • Media reports, as of 11 September, three fatalities across Ibaraki and Chiba Prefectures. In addition, approximately 1,200 flooded buildings were reported accross the aforementioned Prefectures and the Fukushima Prefecture.
  • Over the next 72 hours, more rainfall is forecast over the central and western Honshu Island.
