  • On 14-15 August, tropical cyclone AMPIL continued moving north over the northern Pacific Ocean toward central Honshu island (the main island of Japan), strengthening, as a typhoon. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), on 16 August at 6.00 UTC, its centre was located offshore, near the coast of central Honshu island, approximately 190 km south-east of the Greater Tokyo Area, with maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h (typhoon).
  • Media report, as of 16 August, preventive evacuation orders for around 17,000 households issued by national authorities across the Greater Tokyo Area and the coastal areas of central Honshu island.
  • On 16 August, AMPIL is forecast to continue moving north-eastward over the ocean, close to the coast of central Honshu island, strengthening, with maximum sustained winds up to 210 km/h. On 17 August, it is expected to continue moving north-eastward well off the coast of northern Honshu island, weakening, with maximum sustained winds of 165 km/h.
  • Over the next 72 hours, heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over central and northern Honshu island.

  • The passage of the typhoon AMPIL over the northern Pacific Ocean, close to central Honshu island (particularly nearby the Greater Tokyo Area) on 16 August caused heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges.
  • The Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) reported, as of 17 August, four injured people, two of which in the Kanagawa prefecture and one each in the Fukushima and the neighbouring Ibaraki prefecture. 
  • Over the next 48 hours, heavy rainfall is still forecast over central Honshu island.
