  • A new tropical Cyclone named CHANTHU ("Kiko" in the Philippines) formed over the Philippine Sea on 6 September and is moving west-northwest towards north Luzon. On 9 September at 2.00 UTC, its centre was located about 410 km northeast of Catanduanes Island (Bicol Region) with maximum sustained winds of 195  km/h.
  • CHANTHU is forecast to move northwest crossing the northern Babuyan Islands and central Batanes Islands on 10-11 September. After that, it will make landfall over southern Taiwan on 11-12 September and it coul approach the eastern coast of Zhejiang Province (eastern China) on 13 September.
  • For the next 24 hours, heavy rain and strong winds are forecast over the Babuyan Islands and northern Luzon. A tropical cyclone wind signal number 1 (strong winds prevailing or expected within 36 hours) is in effect for the Provinces of Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Apayao and Isabela (northern Luzon).

  • Tropical Cyclone CHANTHU ("Kiko" in the Philippines) passed over Philippine Sea on 9 September as a typhoon and currently is moving north-west toward the Luzon Strait. On 10 September at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located approximately 160 km east of the coast of northern Luzon (Philippines) and 600 km south-east of southern Taiwan, with maximum sustained winds of 241 km/h (typhoon).
  • On 10-11 September, CHANTHU is forecast to pass over Babuyan and Batanes Islands (Philippines) as a typhoon, and it expected to make landfall over the area of Taitung City (southern Taiwan) on 12 September very early in the morning (UTC), with maximum sustained winds up to 195 km/h.
  • Over the next  48  hours,  heavy rain, strong winds and storm surge are forecast over northern Luzon, Babuyan and Batanes Islands and southern Taiwan. PAGASA has issued Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal number 3, 2 and 1 over the area.

  • Tropical Cyclone CHANTHU is moving over the East China Sea, close to coastal Shanghai Metropolitan Area. On 14 September at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located about 215 km east of Shanghai, with maximum sustained winds of 102 km/h. 
  • According to the official Chinese news agency (Xinhua), in Shanghai, nearly 330,000 people have been evacuated and flights, shipping and rail transit services have been suspended.
  • In the northern Philippines, the passage of CHANTHU on 10-11 September affected at least 25,000 persons, while 500 individuals have been displaced, as reported by  UN OCHA.
  • CHANTHU is expected to weaken as it continues clockwise in the East China Sea. In the early morning of 17 September, it could reach the coast of southern South Korea, with maximum sustained winds up to 75 km/h. 
  • On 14-15 September, moderate to heavy rain and strong winds are forecast over eastern Shanghai, north-eastern Zhejiang Province.

  • Tropical Cyclone CHANTHU is moving north-eastwards over the East China Sea, and on 16 September at 0.00 UTC its centre was located approximately 330 km south-west of Juju Island (southern South Korea), and 410 km south-west of Goto Islands (southern Japan), with maximum sustained winds of 102 km/h.
  • In the early morning of 17 September, CHANTHU is forecast to pass south of Jeju Island, and later make landfall in an area north-west of Kyushu Island (southern Japan), with maximum sustained winds between 90-100 km/h. 
  • Media report that emergency preparedness teams have been deployed in Jeju island. 
  • On 16-17 September, heavy rain and strong winds are forecast over southern South Korea and southern Japan.

  • After passing south of Jeju Island and South Korea, Tropical Cyclone CHANTHU is moving eastward over the East China Sea, approaching southern Japan. On 17 September at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located about 150 km west of Goto Islands (southern Japan), and 170 km west of north-west Kyushu Island (southern Japan).
  • According to media reports, in South Korea, up to 196 residents were temporarily evacuated in some southwestern cities, including Yeosu and Suncheon. Heavy rain and strong winds caused damage to at least 60 houses and public infrastructure.
  • In the morning of 17 September, CHANTHU is forecast to pass over northern Goto Islands and make landfall in an area north-west of Kyushu. 
  • Red warnings for high waves, storms, and heavy rain have been issued for Goto Islands, north and central Prefectures in Kyushu and a typhoon warning is in effect for coastal areas in southeastern South Korea. 
  • Heavy rain, strong winds and high waves are forecast over southern Japan, and south-eastern South Korea on 17-18 September.
