  • An earthquake of magnitude 7.1 M at a depth of 25 km occurred on 8 August at 07:42 UTC (16:42 local time) in the sea at approximately 6 km east of the eastern coast of Miyazaki Prefecture (Kyushu Island, southern-central Japan). The epicentre was located approximately 13 km south-east of Miyazaki City.
  • At least 4 aftershocks up to 5.4 M hit the same area on 8 August.
  • USGS PAGER estimates that up to 400,000 people were exposed to very strong and 777,000 to strong shaking.
  • According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA), a total of 14 people have been injured of whom two in Kumamoto, eight in Miyazaki, and four in Kagoshima prefecture. In addition, one building has been destroyed and two others have been partially damaged.
