  • A new tropical cyclone named SIXTEEN formed over the western South China Sea, is moving northwest over south-eastern China. On 18 October at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located over the sea approximately 172 km south of southern Hainan Island, with maximum sustained winds of 56 km/h (tropical depression).
  • SIXTEEN will continue north-west and it will approach the south-west coast of Hainan Island on 19 October, strengthening. After that, it will change direction moving south-west on 20 October and it will dissipate over the Gulf of Tonkin on 23 October.
  • For the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall and strong winds are forecast over Hainan Island, south-eastern China and north-eastern Vietnam.

  • Tropical storm SANBA continued northward over the Gulf of Tonkin and passed very close to the coast of western Hainan Island in southern China on 18 October, as a tropical storm. On 19 October at 6.00 UTC, its centre was located over the sea approximately 35 km north-west of northern coast of Hainan Island, with maximum sustained winds of 72 km/h.
  • SANBA is forecast to turn south-west over the Gulf and toward northern Vietnam on 20-22 October, remaining a tropical storm.
  • Over the next 72 hours, heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm surges are forecast over Hainan Island, south-western China and northern Vietnam.
