  • Heavy rainfall has been affecting northern, central and western Afghanistan since 10 May, causing flash floods, floods and mudslides, which have resulted in casualties and severe damage. The affected provinces are Baghlan, the worst affected, Badakhshan, Takhar, Ghor, and Herat.
  • UN and media report, as of 14 May, more than 330 fatalities, of which over 300 across the Baghlan province. In addition, media also report an uncertain number of displaced people, who will need temporary shelter. Around 3,000 destroyed houses were reported in the Baghlan province and approximately 300 across Takhar and Badakhshan provinces.  At least 2,000 houses were damaged. Needs are for shelter, food, clean water and medical support. 
  • Over the next 48 hours, drier conditions are expected over the affected areas.

  • Heavy rainfall affected northern and western Afghanistan on 17-18 May, causing flooding that resulted in casualties and damage. The Faryab and Ghor provinces are the worst affected.
  • According to UN OCHA, as of 20 May, at least 120 people died, of whom 84 in Faryab province and 50 in Ghor province, five people have been injured and 40 people are still missing in the Faryab province. Approximately 7,870 buildings have been damaged across both provinces.
  • Over the next 24 hours, drier conditions are expected over the affected areas.
