India - Floods and landslides, update (ECHO 19 May 2022)Thu, 19 May 2022 13:15

  • Heavy rainfall continues to affect northeastern India (in particular Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland States) and the neighbouring eastern Bangladesh (particularly the Sylhet Division) since 13 May, triggering landslides and causing river overflow and floods that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • In India the death toll reached 16. Media report, as of 19 May, 8 fatalities in Assam (across Dima Hasao, Cachar, and Udalguri Districts), 5 fatalities in Arunchal Pradesh (across the Itanagar District) and 3 more fatalities in Meghalaya (across East Khasi Hills, and Ri-Bhoi Districts), mainly due to floods and lanslides. In addition, 4 missing people were reported across the aforementioned States. 
  • The flood situation has particularly deteriorated in Assam. Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report, as of 18 May, 662,385 people affected and nearly 40,000 displaced in 27 districts of the State.

  • North-eastern India and north-eastern Bangladesh have been affected by severe floods and landslides, resulting in casualties. 
  • According to the Indian National Emergency Response Centre (NDMI), the number of fatalities has increased to at least 58 people (of which 33 in Bihar, 24 in Assam, and one in Meghalaya), while around 91,500 people have been displaced across 269 evacuation centres in Assam State. 
  • In Bangladesh, UN OCHA reports that the Districts of Sylhet and Sunamganj (Sylhet Division) have been severely impacted by floods, which have affected around 2 million people. Approximately 150,000 families have been without power since 17 May, while 873 educational institutions have been closed due to severe flooding. According to the latest update by Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), the water levels of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers are above danger level (up to 1 meter) in three stations in Sylhet District.
  • On 24-25 May, light to locally moderate rainfall is forecast in India, over Assam, Bihar, and Meghalaya States, and over northern Bangladesh, including parts of Sylhet.
Bihar, India, Late May 2022Severe weather including strong winds, rain, hail and lightning affected the state of Bihar, India, from 19 May 2022. Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar said 16 districts of the state were affected and 33 people died due to thunderstorms and lightning. According to the limited information available, much of the damage was a result of strong winds and lightning strikes, although some rain was reported. National Emergency Response Centre reported the fatalities were a result of lightning and hails storms. Bihar state said compensation payments were to be issued to families of those who died.
