  • Heavy rainfall and strong winds have been affecting most of the country since the beginning of the rainy season (May 2024) causing floods, landslides and a number of severe weather-related incidents, in particular due to the strong wind that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • The National Coordination for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) and WHO PAHO report, as of 4 September, 28 fatalities across 12 departments of the country, where the worst affected ones are Suchitepéquez and Escuintal with four fatalities each.
  • In addition, CONRED reports 13 injured people, around 24,000 evacuated and a total of approximately 8,500 currently affected people. More than 8,600 damaged buildings - of which 383 were severely damaged - and five destroyed bridges were also reported across the country.
  • Over the next 72 hours, more heavy rainfall is still forecast over the whole country.
