  • Following landslides, flash floods, mudflows and rivers overflow that occurred across the capital Kinshasa (western Democratic Republic of the Congo) over 12-14 December, the number of casualties has increased.
  • Media report, as of 16 December, more than 140 fatalities, 12 people still missing, around 300 collapsed houses and approximately 40,000 flooded houses. Currently, a very large part of Kinshasa (around 12 million inhabitants) is still affected by severe floods.
  • Over the next 24 hours, more heavy rainfall is forecast over western provinces, including the already affected area, and over eastern and southern provinces.

  • Following landslides, flash floods, mudflows and rivers overflow that occurred across several neighbourhoods of the capital Kinshasa (western Democratic Republic of the Congo) over 12-14 December, the number of casualties has increased and severe damage was reported.
  • The worst affected areas are in the south-western Kinshasa metropolitan area, in particular Mont-Ngafula, Ngaliema and Mitendi. In this latter occurred a massive sinkhole that caused a significant number of casualties.
  • UN OCHA reports at least 169 fatalities, 30 injured people, around 280 destroyed houses and a total of approximately 38,000 affected people across the Kinshasa metropolitan area.
  • Over the next 24 hours, more rainfall is forecast over the Kinshasa area and over western Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mid-December 2022Very heavy rainfall has been affecting the western Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in particular the capital Kinshasa, since 12 December, triggering landslides and causing flash floods, mudflows and rivers overflow (particularly the Ndjili, Nsanga, Mokali, and Nsuenge Rivers) that have resulted in casualties and widespread damage. Media report, as of 14 December, at least 120 fatalities, a number of injured people and several collapsed houses across the Kinshasa greater area. In addition, media also report major roads completely blocked and several closed schools.
