  • As of 27 April at 20.36 UTC (28 April at 4.36 local time), a phreatic eruption occurred at Mount Bulusan located in the Sorsogon province, Bicol Region, southern Luzon Island, central Philippines. The eruption produced a plume that reached up to 4,500 m above the crater, dispersing ash to the west and southwest. Pyroclastic flow occurred and descended the southwestern slopes within approximately 3 km from the summit. Ashfall was reported across the Sorsogon province. 
  • The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) places the volcano under Alert Level 1 (low-level unrest).
  • The Disaster Response Operations Management Information Center (DROMIC) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reports, as of 29 April, 61 evacuated people in two shelters across the Sorsogon province and a total of more than 78,150 affected people across the area.
  • The entry into the 4 km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is currently strictly prohibited, as issued by the local authorities.

  • On 29 April at 11:43 UTC, another phreatic eruption occurred at the summit of Bulusan Volcano, lasting 77 minutes. The eruption plume was obscured by clouds but likely drifted southwest, based on reports from communities affected by ashfall.
  • According to the latest report from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), approximately 1 cm of ash was observed in several localities within the municipalities of Irosin and Bulan in Sorsogon Province, Bicol Region, southern Luzon.
  • The Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC) reports that 276 people have been evacuated to two evacuation centers, and nearly 93,000 individuals across 63 barangays in Sorsogon Province have been affected.
  • Alert Level 1 (low-level unrest) remains in effect over Bulusan Volcano. Entry into the 4 km Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited. Residents are also advised to exercise caution within the 2-kilometer Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southeast sector.

  • In the past 24 hours, Bulusan Volcano has shown activity characterised by 66 volcanic earthquakes and weak gas and ash emissions from its crater.
  • The humanitarian impact continues to increase following the initial phreatic eruption that began on 27 April. According to the Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC), 2,443 people have been evacuated to five evacuation centers, and more than 110,000 individuals across 73 barangays in Sorsogon Province have been affected.
  • Alert Level 1 (low-level unrest) remains in effect for Bulusan Volcano. Entry into the 4 km Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited. Residents are also advised to exercise caution within the 2 km Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southeastern sector.

The Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report provides information about global volcanism on a weekly basis. Latest Bulusan report has been published on 23 Apr 2025 18:43.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported increased seismicity at Bulusan. Seismicity recorded from 0300 on 12 April until 2200 on 21 April consisted of 94 weak volcano-tectonic earthquakes indicating rock fracturing, another four low-frequency volcanic earthquakes indicating fluid movement. The earthquake locations were within 20 km depth, with about half characterized as shallow. Weak-to-moderate gas emissions rose from the summit crater and active vents.
