  • A new volcanic eruption, characterized by lava flow and explosive activity - steam explosions and tephra- started on 29 May at 12.46 UTC at the Sundhnúkur crater on the Reykjanes Peninsula in south-western Iceland. The lava has flowed mostly to the south and west direction over Grindavík road and Nesvegur road and the main part of the eruptive fissure is about 2.4 km long.
  • According to the Icelandic Civil Protection, people living in the Grindavík town area or nearby have been asked to evacuate, the electricity connections in the town have been interrupted and some roads and parking have been affected by the lava flow.
  • A new risk assessment has been updated by the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) following this recent volcanic event.

  • According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO), as of 8 June at 16:20 UTC, the lava flows that started on 29 May have continued at Sundhnúksgígaröðin, north of Grindavik, on the Reykjanes Peninsula in south-western Iceland. The lava flow has mainly flowed northwest near Sýlingarfell, north and west towards Grindavíkurvegur.
  • In Grindavíkurvegur the lava flow passes the protective barrier and reaches the road, it is moving slowly but the lava front is about 800 m from the hot water pipelines.
  • The hazard for volcanic unrest is very high in the affected area, the IMO is closely monitoring the situation.
