  • An earthquake of magnitude 6.3, at a depth of 35 km, occurred on Tanega-shima Island (Kagoshima Prefecture, southern Japan) on 8 January at 12:39 UTC. The epicentre was located approximately 10 km north-east of Nakatane Town and 15 km south-east of Nishinoomote Town.
  • USGS PAGER estimates that up to 1 000 people were exposed to strong shaking.
  • There are no reports of casualties or damage.
