Somalia, May 2021Gu' season rainfall in Somalia caused flooding and damages from late April / early May 2021. On 09 May 2021 UN OCHA reported at least 25 fatalities due to the heavy rains: nine children in Banadir (Mogadishu) who died after their house flooded on 07 May; three people killed by lightning in Puntland and one child that fell into a pond of water on 05 May; four children who died in a dam full of rainwater in Caynabo, Sool region on 07 May; one person killed by flooding in Buurhakaba, Bay region and seven IDPs who died on 09 May in Garasbaley district, Banadir (Mogadishu), following the collapse of their house due to heavy rains. The overflowing Shabelle River caused flooding in 15 villages in Jowhar, Middle Shabelle region from around 05 May 2021. UN OCHA estimated 25,000 people were affected. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) warned that at least 150,000 people are at risk from imminent floods as river levels increased after "unprecedented excessive rains in the upper parts of the Ethiopian highlands."
