  • After the passage of tropical cyclone GELENA, which passed closed to Rodrigues Island on 10 February with winds up to 185 km/h, 142 people have been evacuated to centres, 90% of the island's 41 669 inhabitants are left without power, and there are significant transport disruptions.
  • Over the next 24 hours, it is forecast to move south-east over the Southern Indian Ocean, weakening. 
  • According to Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS), strong winds and storm surges will continue to affect the southern and south-western coast of Rodrigues.

  • Tropical cyclone GELENA continued moving south-southeast over the Indian Ocean, strengthening. As of 8 February, at 0.00 UTC, its centre was located between north of Madagascar and Mauritius, with maximum sustained winds up to 148 km/h.
  • Over the next 24 hours, it is forecast to strengthen and move south-east, with maximum sustained winds up to 231 km/h. Heavy rains, strong winds and storm surge are forecast over Mauritius Island, Saint Brandon Island and Rodrigues Island.
  • As of 8 February, a Class I warning has been issued by the Mauritius Meteorological Services (MMS) for Mauritius Island and Rodrigues Island.

  • Tropical cyclone GELENA is strengthening as it continues south over the Indian Ocean. As of 7 February 0.00 UTC, its centre was located approximately 380 km east of Antsiranana City (Diana Region, north of Madagascar) and 940 km north-north-west of Reunion Island (France).
  • Over the next 24 hours, it is forecast to move south-east, with projected maximum sustained winds up to 185 km/h.
  • According to the Madagascar Meteorological Service (DGM), moderate rainfall and wind is expected over north-eastern Madagascar over the next 24 hours.

  • Over the next 24 hours, it is forecast to strengthen as it turns south-east, with maximum sustained winds up to 105 km/h.
  • Moderate rainfall is forecast over Agalega Island.
