  • On 3 June at 10:51 UTC, an explosive eruption occurred at Kanlaon Volcano, located in the Negros Occidental province, northern Negros Island, central Philippines.
  • A voluminous plume of at least 5,000 m high and pyroclastic flows of approximately 2-3 km have been observed on the southern and south-eastern slopes of the volcano. Ashfall has also been reported on western slopes.
  • The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised the alert level from Level 1 (abnormal) to Level 2 (increasing unrest), meaning that entry into the 4-km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is prohibited.
  • As of 4 June, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that 796 people have been evacuated from the barangays of Bago, La Carlota, La Castellana, Moises Padilla and Pontevedra in Negros Occidental, and from the Canlaon barangay in Negro Oriental municipality, and have been sheltered in eight evacuation centres. In addition, several flights have been cancelled or delayed in Bacolod-Silay Airport in the City of Silay in northern Negros Occidental province.

  • Over the past 24 hours, the volcanic activity of Kanlaon Volcano, Negros Occidental province, central Philippines, continues and was characterized by 53 volcanic earthquakes, SO2 emissions (4,113 tonnes) and an ash plume 2 km high drifting from south-southwest to north-west.
  • According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), as of 5 June, almost 2,000 people have been displaced, of whom 1,435 sheltered in 12 evacuation centres - 1,280 in Western Visayas and 155 in Central Visayas - and 188 were served outside. A total of eight domestic flights and one international flight were cancelled, and a State of Calamity was declared in Canlaon Municipality, Negros Oriental province.
  • National authorities are providing assistance for those affected, and the alert level of the volcano stands at 2 (increasing unrest) as reported by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). Entry into 4 km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) from the crater are not allowed.

  • In the past 24 hours, the activity of Kanlaon Volcano, Negros Occidental province, central Philippines,  was characterised by 27 volcanic earthquakes, SO2 emission (3,464 tonnes) and an ash plume 1.5 km high drifting from northwest to southeast and southwest. Moreover, heavy rain and thunderstorms generated lahar events on the southern slopes of the volcano. The lahars were channel-confined but one of them that flowed along the Tamburong Creek overflowed and impacted the main road in Biak-na-Bato, rendering this impassable.
  • Due to the volcanic activity, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reports, as of 6 June, 1,669 displaced and 2,400 affected people across Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental provinces. In addition, according to Save the Children, at least 684 schools have been closed affecting about 385,000 students.
  • National authorities are still helping those affected, and the alert level of the volcano stands at level 2 (increasing unrest). Entry into a 4 km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) from the crater is not allowed. 
  • On 6-7 June, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms are forecast over Negros Island.

  • The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded in the past 24 hours 14 volcanic earthquakes, SO2 emissions (1,412 tonnes), and an ash plume up to 2,000 m high that drifted from north-east to south-west. 
  • According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), as of 7 June, almost 1,800 people have been displaced, of whom 1,400 were evacuated in eight evacuation centres, and more than 25,600 people have been affected across Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental Province. The road in La Castellana Municipality, Negros Occidental Province has been affected by a lahar event - triggered by heavy rainfall - that occurred on 5 - 6 June.
  • National authorities are assessing areas affected by the volcanic eruption and provided to clean the road hit by the lahar event. The alert level of the volcano stands at level 2 (increasing unrest). Entry into a 4 km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) from the crater is not allowed. 
  • For the next 24 hours, cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are forecast in the impacted area.

  • The activity of Kanlaon volcano located in Negros Island, central-southern Philippines continues. In the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded six volcanic earthquakes, SO2 emissions and an ash plume 300 m high drifting north-east.
  • According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, more than 4,700 people have been displaced - almost 4,400 served inside eight evacuation centres - and more than 29,137 others have been affected in the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental.
  • National authorities issued a declaration of calamity for the towns of La Castellana and Canlaon and the alert level of the volcano stands at level 2 (increasing unrest). Entry into a 4 km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) from the crater is not allowed.

The Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report provides information about global volcanism on a weekly basis. Latest Kanlaon report has been published on 29 May 2024 08:59.
In a special notice for Kanlaon, PHIVOLCS stated that the seismic network detected 24 volcano-tectonic earthquakes during 1335-1630 on 26 May with local magnitudes of 0.8-2.3 and depths of 0-6 km beneath the W flank. Sulfur dioxide gas emissions from the summit crater had been elevated since 1 January, averaging 1,291 tonnes/day (t/d); the most recent measurement was 2,003 t/d, recorded on 26 May. Ground deformation data from continuous GPS and electronic tilt data had been recording inflation at the volcano since March 2022. The Alert Level remained at 1 (on a scale of 0-5) and PHIVOLCS reminded the public to remain outside of the 4-km-radius Permanent Danger Zone.
